Nearly within rock-throwing distance of the highest point in the Ozarks in national forest country the Buffalo National River gets its start. In the headwaters area some floating takes place. Among serious paddlers the "Hailstone" trip from Dixon Road to Arkansas 21 is almost legendary, but, for most to put on their hiking boots, this is a good place in general. A 14,200-acre tract managed by the buffalo national river in jasper and the Ozark National Forest a real treat is the Upper Buffalo Wilderness. Bluffs, caves, old cabin sites, waterfalls, a local black bear and maybe even natural springs can be expected to be seen here. Scenery To describe scenery along the river spectacular is the best word. For 150 miles, an unmatched mixture of inviting gravel bars, clear water, overhanging hardwoods, and lofty cliffs are offered by the Buffalo. Off the river there's excellent scenery, too. Whenever you go you should not miss visiting the Lost Valley. Between Ponca and Boxley, there is a unique canyon and it must be visited. Especially in its upper reaches where an 11,800-acre wilderness area awaits the adventurous the Richland Creek Valley, which is also a sight-seer's paradise. For couples there are romantic getaways in jasper ar. 10 miles in length is the next stretch of Buffalo River, to Highway 123 (or Carver) from Arkansas 7. Especially for families this is a fine float although it doesn't offer the spectacular scenery available just upstream. Numerous bluffs, class I rapids, and gravel bars are featured by it. At Carver or two-and-a-half miles upstream at Hasty Camping access and sites are available. Seasons For all seasons The Buffalo River is suitable. Except in the upper reaches, Buffalo River canoeing is a year-round possibility. Here it's limited to the spring and winter months. Though the lowest winter temperatures of the state that occurs must be remembered by the visitors but along this stream Buffalo River floats trips, is a year-long activity. For backpacking and hiking the corridor of the Buffalo is also a great place.
